“How are you nourished?” In this health-conscious age we tend to think of nourishment in terms of diet and supplements. Although providing the physical body with healthy food and vitamins is extremely important, over 70% of a person’s total energy is related to emotional well-being.* The goal of this column is to encourage you to appreciate the aspects of your life that currently provide nourishment (the companionship of a loved one, a regular yoga practice, doing the Sunday crossword) and identify one or two opportunities to adopt a more positive perspective, feel more energized, and experience more balanced emotions (such as reading a fiction book or revisiting a past hobby or passion).
If you struggle to identify what provides you nourishment, then look to the opposite and identify what depletes you? Starting or ending your day listening to snarky and cynical newscasters or DJs, a long commute, critical friends, tolerating a broken appliance you’ve been meaning to get fixed? What can you do to mitigate the ill effects of aspects of your life that cause unnecessary drama and stress?
Personal growth and positive change do not demand a revolutionary overhaul of your current behavior, but an evolutionary shift in how you think about yourself and your primary needs. Like standing on a balcony and slightly moving your head a few inches offers you an entirely new 180 degree vista, it does not require a lot of energy to avail yourself of a new horizon of possibility and unique landscape of opportunity.
Select a part of yourself or your life that craves nourishment (mind/body/soul/relationships/environment/creativity/adventure) and ask yourself “What do I need to add to invite equilibrium and tranquility?” Or, “What do I need to change to avoid anxious emotions and a polarized mindset?” The answer could lead you to quiet calm or stimulating creativity – each person is nourished in different ways, and those ways change depending on the time and context. If it sounds complicated, then maybe a sense of simplicity is worth nurturing.
