The ABC’s of Coaching

Values are the building blocks of coaching. Generally, if you are dissatisfied with aspects of your life, or if your efforts are not yielding a proportional ROI (return on investment), it is due to not honoring your values or aligning your actions with your priorities. By identifying and living your values, you strengthen the foundation from which everything else is built.

A is for Accountability

Coaching helps keep you aligned with your goals and values and holds you responsible for creating a life of meaning, purpose, and productivity. As the client, you give the coach permission to call you on your stuff, to point out when you are losing focus, wasting time, and sabotaging your potential.

B is for Balance

Balance is not about giving equal attention to all the diverse elements of your life (work, family, health, finances, home, community, friends, romance, personal growth, creative expression, intellectual stimulation) all at the same time. It is about learning to flow between them in a way in which they start to complement each other rather than compete with each other. An appropriate symbol looks less like a static balance beam and more like a seesaw that moves in a constant yet inconsistent rhythm – simultaneously traveling in multiple directions. The goal is not to stabilize the board from the center, but to gently swing between the extremes without losing control or falling off.

C is for Choice

Newton’s first law of motion states, an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. This is why many life changes are instigated through crisis such as: the loss of a job, the break-up of a relationship, or the diagnosis of a disease. Coaching is about taking pro-active action to create the life you crave by helping you expand your perspective to see a range of possibilities to choose from and giving you the tools, structure, and confidence to make the choices you might have previously believed were out of reach.
